Before I and 40 other women enter the Department of Nike Archives, we’re given a quick briefing on the do’s and don’ts: No food or drinks; No touching; No wide-angle photography; No geo-tagging. This is the inconspicuous treasure trove of Nike history, housing nearly 1000 relics that date back to the company’s early 1970s beginnings, tucked into an unassuming corner of the Beaverton, Ore., HQ.

tara.jpg

Her music videos have received millions upon millions of views, but if you are not familiar, you may’ve never seen Tara Razavi herself. That’s because she isn’t a musician — she’s the woman responsible for bringing musicians’ visions to life.

brujas.jpg

It’s easy to label Brujas as what they appear or are presented to be: an all-girl skate crew hailing from The Bronx, New York. But you should never judge a skateboarder by their deck. Brujas’ members are collectively shredding every misrepresentation and barrier of what it means to be “female skateboarders.”

The days left in July of this year is waning. And not a single one has produced the highly-anticipated second studio album from Frank Ocean. By this point, it’s been exactly one year since the artist formally known as Christopher Edwin Breaux said that Boys Don’t Cry would arrive, but a new, peculiar update on his website as of two weeks ago has us all convinced that this would finally be the month.

lola.jpg

Behind every musician, there’s a Lola Plaku. You might not know her name because she isn’t much of a see-and-be-seen kind of person, but you know her work. The biggest artists weren’t always that — the likes of Drake, The Weeknd, French Montana, Travis Scott and Kehlani all had to start somewhere, and Lola was there for their humble beginnings.

khloe.jpg

It seems the world’s been keeping up with Khloe Kardashian and her curves since the inception of her reality television show. Her figure is a recurring tabloid topic – now it’s in the spotlight this time at the forefront of a new body revolution.

beyonce.jpg

An unfeasible phenomenon, the world stopped for a second time on April 23. If you recall, the first was when Beyoncé dropped that digital seemingly out of thin air, unbeknownst to the rest of us that she had a surprise album up her sleeve. This time around, everyone tried to brace themselves as best they could.

adwoa.jpg

You’d be mistaken if you thought fashion is simply telling us what to wear. Style is innately who we are after all — and it’s an industry that’s, in a sense, telling you who to be season after season, for better or worse. However for its latest campaign, Gap simply wants you to be you — be authentic. Just be.

Dear Marc Jacobs, I can’t remember the first time I ever straightened my hair myself, but I do remember why: I didn’t want to be ugly anymore. As a kid, I’d heard “beauty is pain” before, but my understanding of what that actually meant was limited, of course. Like most girls, I learned rather quickly.

“Sir, can you just turn down 125th?” Teyana Taylor doesn’t live in Harlem anymore, but she knows it way better than the driver who’s taking us to the launch of her Reebok shoe. She doesn’t come back often because, on top of being a mother to an 8-month-old baby with husband Iman Shumpert, being the leading lady of Kanye West’s “Fade” video has brought a whole new level of busy to her life.

Solange literally means “angel of the sun,” so it should come as no surprise that she may be one of the most ethereal beings you might ever meet. And yet somehow she’s also one of the most down to earth — we were happy to learn this ourselves upon meeting her at the Reebok Classics Crib during Coachella.

erika.jpg

Discussions about porn still remain taboo and as an industry, the mainstream sector has remained mostly the same. It’s produced mainly for and by men, often perpetuating unrealistic — and sometimes unsafe — standards about sex at the expense of women and their sexuality. But Erika Lust is on a hardcore mission to get women into porn — in more ways than one.

gilda.jpg

Gilda Ambrosio is your favorite designer’s favorite designer. Maybe you recognize her as one of the dubbed “it-girls” being snapped among the who-what-wear of every international fashion week. Or perhaps you remember seeing her being praised as a muse by said designers, like Jerry Lorenzo.

florencia.jpg

You might know Florencia Galarza as someone who helped drive New York City’s nightlife scene alongside her fellow Been Trill members. Being a part of that collective would take her around the world to DJ for the likes of Kanye West and Jay Z during their ‘Watch the Throne’ would tour, for example.

abir.jpg

Abir Haronni, or simply just ABIR, is someone you can’t really put into a box. The Queens, NY-based, Arlington, VA native, who was born in Morocco, prefers it that way. At 14, she began singing professionally, but it wasn’t until a few months ago, when she’d release her first single, “Wave,” with fellow DMV up-and-comer Masego, earning triple-digit spins and radio play.
